VTANG PFAS Expanded Site Inspection

Vermont National Guard Public Affairs

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vermont  –

The Expanded Site Inspection (ESI) for PFAS (Per-and-Polyfluoralkyl Substances) continues within the vicinity of the Vermont Air National Guard via an Air National Guard contract starting in July.

The final results of the expanded site inspection are expected in early 2020.

The ESI follows the process found under the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and is guided by Vermont regulatory requirements for PFAS. In cooperation with Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VT DEC), this inspection is the next step following the results of the 2017 Site Investigation that confirmed elevated levels of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic (PFOS) above Vermont regulatory limits. The object of this phase is to fully delineate the extent of on and off-Base contamination.

“Our adherence to CERCLA’s deliberate, scientific process and cooperative efforts with VT DEC demonstrates our continued commitment to appropriately responding to this issue,” said Mr. Shannon Kelly, 158th Fighter Wing Environmental Manager.

Drinking water for the base and neighboring communities is supplied by the Champlain Water District (CWD). Testing of finished water found no detection of PFAS. Information specific to water testing can be found on the CWD website: https://www.champlainwater.org/174/Perfluorooctanoic-Acid-Update.
