Disarming Danger: VTANG EOD's Dual Mission

Vermont Air National Guard Base — When a suspicious bazooka round turns up in a Vermont garage or a decades-old artillery round is uncovered at a construction site overseas, Master Sgt. Andrew Borgens and his team are often the ones called to respond. Borgens serves as the 158th Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight chief with the Vermont Air National Guard’s 158th Fighter Wing, where he leads Airmen charged with protecting people and property from explosive hazards. “The easiest definition would be that we’re in charge of protection of personnel and property when it comes to explosive hazards,” Borgens said.

Former 158th Fighter Wing Commander Promoted to Brigadier General

U.S. Air Force Col. Daniel P. Finnegan was promoted to the rank of brigadier general, marking a significant milestone in a career spanning more than three decades of service to the United States Air Force, the Vermont National Guard, and the Nation.

Military Service Builds Career Readiness

Airman 1st Class Isis Edwards is originally from Manchester, Connecticut, and is a drill status Guardsman at the Vermont Air National Guard. She joined the VTANG in 2023 at the age of 19 and is currently working in the Judge Advocate General's office, providing legal assistance for her fellow Airmen.

Update: Night Flying at the 158th Fighter Wing Extended

The Vermont Air National Guard's 158th Fighter Wing will conduct night flying operations Tuesday, Oct. 21, through Friday, Oct. 24, then again on Tuesday, Oct. 28, through Thursday, Oct. 30, and lastly on Nov. 4 through Nov. 6.

More than 6,000 Attend Vermont National Guard Open House

More than 6,000 visitors streamed through the gates of the Vermont Air National Guard base for the 2025 Vermont National Guard Open House, experiencing firsthand the aircraft, equipment, and people behind the mission.

More than 6,000 visitors showed up to an open house hosted by the Vermont Air and Army National Guard, where military aviation, equipment, vehicles, munitions and flight simulators were on display, along with a career fair, musical performances and police dog demonstrations.

The Vermont National Guard confirms that multiple military and civilian aircraft and vehicles will be featured on static display at the upcoming Open House on Sunday, Sept. 7. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore all aircraft along with the VTANG’s own F-35A Lightning II.

The Vermont Air National Guard had a significant transition of leadership during a change of command ceremony at Camp Johnson, Colchester, Vermont, as Brig. Gen. David Shevchik Jr. assumed command as the Assistant Adjutant General, Air, succeeding Brig. Gen. Henry Harder Jr. on August 1, 2025.
