Vermont National Guard Public Affairs

Sgt. Deedra Irwin and Spc. Sean Doherty, both assigned to Detachment 1, Garrison Support Command, participated in the Martin Fourcade Nordic Festival in France Sept. 2-4.

Irwin and Doherty, the first Americans ever invited to the event, finished seventh in the Women's Mass Start and second in the Men's Mass Start, respectively.

"I'm really excited to have Americans here for the first time this year; it's very special," Fourcade said in a statement on the International Biathlon Union's website.

"What a great day," Doherty said. "It was fun and exciting like a World Cup. I wasn't under pressure, I'm not the Olympic champion; I just wanted to put on a good show."

The Martin Fourcade Nordic Festival is an elite summer biathlon invitation only event and is comprised of the best biathletes in the world. More information about the competition can be found on their website.
