Vermont Soldiers continue D.C. mission after extension approval

Vermont National Guard Public Affairs

CAMP JOHNSON, Vermont  –

The Vermont National Guard has been asked to continue to support security operations in Washington, D.C. into February, and will do so after Gov. Phil Scott approved the extension.

Most of the over 100 Soldiers from the Vermont Army National Guard will remain in Washington, D.C. until late February. Around 30 Soldiers returned Sunday evening, and the same number of replacements will leave Tuesday.

“We are excited to continue our mission and honored to be asked to continue to serve in this important role,” said Capt. Erik Lahr, Vermont Task Force Commander. “Our Soldiers have done a great job remaining flexible to the needs of the mission, and will continue to do so into February.”

“Our Soldiers safety and well-being is always at the top of our priority list,” said Col. Justin Davis, operations officer, Vermont Army National Guard. “The needs of our Soldiers are being met and leaders on the ground report that conditions are comfortable, and morale is high. The Vermont Task Force continues following all state and federal COVID-19 guidelines, while deployed and upon return.”

All Service members deployed in support of Operation Capitol Response follow COVID-19 protocols in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and will quarantine upon their return from the Capitol region. Out of an abundance of caution, we are not permitting interviews with Vermont Soldiers returning from Washington, D.C. Virtual interviews may be coordinated after arrival.

Effective October 1, 2024: To streamline communications, all F-35 and Air National Guard related inquiries should be routed directly to the 158th Fighter Wing contact page or by calling 802-660-5379. F-35 flying alerts (ie night flying schedules) will only be posted on the Vermont Air National Guard website.
