104th Fighter Wing to train in southern Vt.

Vermont National Guard Public Affairs

CAMP JOHNSON, Vermont  –

The 104th Fighter Wing, Massachusetts Air National Guard, is scheduled to conduct training exercises with F-15 Eagles in and around southern Vermont during the month of June in support of Operation Eagle Claw 21-01.

The training is a critical part of the 104th FW's mission and allows the wing to accomplish core training tasks.

The Eagle Claw exercise is designed to provide training in basic fighter maneuvering and air combat maneuvering (air-to-air combat) in a clean jet configuration to comply with the Air National Guard’s training objectives. Clean configuration means that no external fuel tanks or pods are attached underneath the wings. With no external fuel tanks, the ability for the fighter aircraft to transit long distances to and from other existing special use airspace for training is severely limited.

Sorties will take place in and around the Chugs Temporary Military Operations Area, in the vicinity of Windham, Vermont. Projected typical use of the Chugs TMOA is 12 sorties per day, with expected average sortie duration of less than one hour. Use of the TMOA will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

The work included re-piping the heating system, installing LED lighting and replacing ceiling tiles. It could have cost the Illinois Army National Guard from $225,000 to $418,000 had it been contracted out. Courtesy photo.
