U.S. ARMY COL MATTHEW BROWN

Chief of Staff, Vermont National Guard

COL Matthew Brown has more than 31 years of uniformed service, enlisting in the Vermont Army National Guard in 1993 and commissioning through the state OCS program in 1998.

His commands include A Co 2-172 AR (2003-2006) (Kuwait – 2005), Army Mountain Warfare School (2017-2019), and the Garrison Support Command (2022-2024).

He has served in numerous key staff positions including battalion S1, S3, S4 and Executive Officer and brigade S1 and Executive Officer.  At the state level, he served as the State Training Officer and Deputy Chief of Staff-Personnel before his selection as Chief of Staff - Army.

COL Brown is a graduate of the Armor Basic Course, Armor Captain’s Career Course, summer and winter phases of the Basic Military Mountaineer Course, Intermediate Level Education Common Core, the Army Command and General Staff Officer Course and Brigade Pre-Command Course.

Decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (8), Army Commendation Medal (6), Army Achievement Medal (4), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

He is married with three grown children and lives with his wife Tina in northwestern VT.

Master of Arts in National Security & Strategic Studies from the College of Naval Warfare, Newport, RI
