U.S. ARMY MAJOR GENERAL GREGORY KNIGHT

Vermont Adjutant General

Maj. Gen. Gregory Knight is currently serving as the Adjutant General, Vermont National Guard. Knight has 40 years of uniformed service - 27 years of commissioned service and 13 years of prior enlisted service. Knight started his enlisted career with the U.S. Coast Guard in October 1983, serving six years and separating from the service as a Yeoman Second Class (E5) in October 1989. Following his service with the USCG, Knight pursued a career in Vermont Law Enforcement, serving four years as a Burlington Police Officer and seven years as the Chief Liquor Investigator with the Department of Liquor Control. Concurrent with his law enforcement career, Knight continued his military career as a traditional Guard member, serving seven years with the Vermont Air National Guard as a Security Forces Specialist. He earned his commission through Officer Candidate School in 1997, joining the Vermont Army National Guard and serving three years as a traditional National Guard officer. Knight was selected for Active Guard and Reserve duty (AGR) in June of 2000 and served in this status until his election as Vermont Adjutant General in 2019.

He is married to Tracy, his wife of 29 years. They have four children – Jason (31), Griffin (29), daughter Colby(26) and Cooper (21). MG Knight is a long-time resident of Huntington, VT.

MG Knight has served as an Armor Platoon Leader with C/1-172AR in Morrisville, VT; Armor Company Commander with B/1-172AR in Enosburg, VT; Armor Battalion Assistant Operations Officer with HHC/1-172AR in St. Albans, VT; Cavalry Squadron Operations Officer with HHC/1-172CAV in St. Albans, VT; Brigade Special Troops Battalion Operations Officer with 86th BSTB in Rutland, VT; Recruiting and Retention Battalion Commander, JFHQ VTARNG in Colchester, VT; Regimental Deputy Commander with 1-124th Regional Training Institute (RTI) in Colchester, VT; Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, JFHQ VTARNG in Colchester, VT; and most recently the VTNG Human Resources Officer. He was elected as Vermont Adjutant General on 01MAR19.

Deployment experience
Knight deployed to Ramadi, Iraq from June 2005 – June 2006, serving as the Battle Captain for Task Force Saber, First Battalion, 172nd Armor Regiment, VTARNG as part of the Second Brigade, 28th Division, Iron Soldiers. In his role as Battle Captain, Knight provided oversight for all battalion combat operations outside Forward Operating Base Ramadi. His duties included tracking the location and status of all friendly forces conducting combat operations; facilitating indirect fire support (artillery); coordinating fixed wing and rotary wing air support; calling for MEDEVAC and Quick Reaction Force response; providing for EOD support; and ensuring adjacent unit, Iraqi and higher headquarters coordination.
